| Greymon’s Mega Flame in Digimon Adventure |
Greymon is one of the most recognizable Digimon in the franchise, and his signature attack, Mega Flame, is powerful enough to defeat most of his opponents. But how powerful is Mega Flame really? This post aims to answer that question using information provided by the Digimon Adventure anime.
Among Greymon’s most notable feats is his ability to melt rock, which typically melts at around 1,200 °C. This clearly places Mega Flame above Agumon’s Baby Flame, which is capable of melting steel at approximately 1,500 °C. Even a much smaller version of Mega Flame has been shown to destroy part of a building and travel at high speeds. However, Greymon’s most impressive feats include destroying a rock avalanche and causing an explosion that vaporizes rock and leaves behind a crater.
These feats are not performed in isolation, as multiple Digimon are involved. Therefore, the total energy must be distributed among the participating Digimon.
Between these feats, the second one provides clearer visual scaling and measurable results, making it the most suitable for comparative analysis. For that reason, it will be used as the basis for estimating the energy output of Mega Flame.

- Tai’s height: 1.5 meters = 70 px
- Initial crater size: 265 px = 5.6 meters

Using the 5.6-meter diameter as a reference, we can estimate the remaining dimensions:
- Crater upper diameter: 775 px = 5.6 meters
- Crater lower diameter: 565 px = 4.3 meters
- Crater depth: 80 px = 0.6 meters
With these dimensions, we model the crater as a truncated cone, following the same method previously applied in the Gamera analysis of the Sendai destruction.
The volume of a truncated cone is given by:
Where:
- R₁ = upper crater radius
- R₂ = lower crater radius
- h = depth
Substituting the values:
Assuming an average rock density of 2,500 kg/m³:
As established in previous posts, vaporizing 1 kg of rock requires approximately 10 MJ of energy. Applying this value:
This corresponds to approximately 158 tons of TNT.
Energy Distribution Among Digimon
It is important to note that multiple Digimon participated in this attack: Greymon, Flamedramon, Kabuterimon, Ikkakumon, and Togemon. Although Togemon’s attacks are not explosive, it will still be included in the total contribution. This gives a total of five Digimon.
Dividing the total energy equally:
This equals approximately 31 tons of TNT per Digimon, about 2.8 times the energy of the MOAB (11 tons of TNT).
This places the attacks of a strong Champion-level Digimon, such as Greymon, within the range of the most powerful non-nuclear weapons used by modern militaries.
With temperatures exceeding 1,500 °C and an estimated output of 1.32 × 10¹¹ joules, Mega Flame stands out as one of the most powerful abilities available to a Champion-level Digimon.
